IIm-Raipur, a premier business school in India, has introduced rural study program for its students. Moreover, the best part, this will be a compulsory stint for all students enrolled in the institute. The students enrolled in the MBA program in this B-school will have to spend a week in rural part of the country. This is made compulsory to understand the true Indian spirit.
B S Sahay, director of IIM-Raipur, explained the reason for such a decision. Rural marketing is highly in demand in the current global scenario. The Marketing courses introduce the concepts and business models to students. However, the course content is unable to present the real life situations, which the rural stint will help. The marketing managers are aloof of what is happening in the real world. By introducing students to the rural markets, they can develop and plan marketing strategies sitting in their posh corporate offices.
IIM-Raipur has parterned with Pholbasan Yadav, a Padma Shri awardee from Chhattisgarh for the rural stint. Pholbasan Yadav is a person who have major contribution in the rural areas of India. He had helped rural women find employment through self-help groups. More than 10,000 women found livelihood with his efforts.
During the rural marketing stint, students are required to take up projects, related to rural marketing, according to their choice. After examining the market conditions in the rural areas, they have to prepare a report. The report should include points like ideas that should be implemented in the area for development.
According to the sources, this postgraduate management course is in the stages of development and will be officially launched in the academic session 2013. It is planned that students will spend a week in the Rajnandgaon in Chhattisgarh.
