Want to Pursue PhD Program from an IIT….Go for NIT!!

Good news for students willing to pursue a PhD program from an IIT!  The board of directors of IIT has made the proposal to permit students of National Institute of Technology (NIT) to complete their final year of graduation from an IIT.

The aim is to attract more IIT graduates into PhD program to boost the number of doctoral fellows. Along with IIT students, the proposal aims to attract talented students from other premier engineering colleges in India. The proposal plans to be executed at two levels. Firstly, to ensure that IIT resources are utilized optimally, and secondly, the IITs attract more number of talented students to pursue PhD program. NIT being one of the top ranking engineering institutes in India is the foremost choice for the proposal. The decision will offer life time opportunity to NITians to get graduate degree from their respective institute and PhD degree from an IIT.

The selection of students to an IIT will be on the basis of their excellent performance in starting three years of B.Tech, interview and recommendations from NIT faculty. Once selected, the bright students will get an opportunity to complete their fourth year of engineering course and PhD program from an IIT. The duration of course offered in an IIT will be 5 years.

So, NIT is going to offer another gateway to the Indian Institute of Technology once the proposal is passed by the approving authorities. At present, Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) is an all India competitive exam for engineering students willing to take admission in IITs and other reputed colleges including NIT. JEE is divided into two parts- (1) JEE MAIN and (2) JEE ADVANCED. The first exam, JEE Main is taken to get admission in various reputed participating engineering colleges in India, whereas JEE advanced is for taking admission in IITs only. Candidates are allowed to take maximum 3 consecutive attempts to appear for the exam.
